Course Outline and Schedule

In Module A, we focus on yoga for the musculoskeletal system, including a foundational anatomical understanding as well as the therapeutic benefits of yoga for common low-back, upper-back, knee, hip, and shoulder problems. Module A also prepares students to communicate effectively with doctors by familiarizing them with the terminology of reports and clinical notes, including S.O.A.P. notes.

Students meet approximately* 10 times throughout the program, typically on weekends, with the exception of one 4-day course and one 3-day course (details in the schedule below). Students are required to complete a yoga protocol for each topic covered, as well as a take-home Ayurveda dosha assignment. Each class includes a combination of lecture, demonstration, partner work, and practical experience. Content includes relevant anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Case presentations will be used to apply information at least four times throughout the program. The practical component of the curriculum includes evaluations of self and other participants using observation, interview, and questionnaires. The course includes a mentoring component, with a total of five hours of mentoring required (in person, or via Skype or telephone); payment is made directly to the mentor. Students are required to take a multiple-choice test before and after completion of the course.

The two modules may be taken concurrently, or in either order. Each module guarantees 150 contact hours. Students have up to a year to complete each module. Teachers who successfully complete both modules are eligible to apply for Yoga Alliance certification at the 300-hour level, or at the 500-hour level if they hold a 200-hour yoga teacher certificate from the Shala. Graduates are also eligible to enter our Clinical Yoga Therapy Practicum, accredited by the International Association of Yoga Therapists. For more information, visit www.iayt.org.

Please note: The yoga therapy components of our course are based on IAYT accreditation, not derived from our status as an RYS® with Yoga Alliance Registry.
