Course Description: Pranayama, the ancient yogic science of breath control, offers a powerful modality for cultivating self-awareness and restoring mental and physical well-being. In this comprehensive course, we explore the profound impact of breath on the human system and delve into the art of pranayama to address a spectrum of health conditions. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of breathing and its effects on the body’s various systems, preparing them to create tailored protocols for specific health issues, from mental health and neurodegenerative disorders to respiratory and other symptoms of body ‘dis-ease’.

• Understanding the Foundations of Pranayama
• Explore the history and development of pranayama, understanding the ancient practices and their relevance in the modern context.
• Gain insights into the traditional concepts of pranayama and their impact on energetic channels (nadis) and vital energy (prana).
• Breathwork and the Human Body
• Delve into the physiological, psychological, and energetic aspects of breath and how it affects the respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine, cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous systems.
• Learn the correlation between breath and mental health, neuroplasticity, cognitive functioning, and emotional well-being.
• Breathing Assessment and Techniques
• Acquire skills to assess individual breathing patterns and their connection to specific health conditions.
• Explore a variety of pranayama techniques and their applications, adapting them to address diverse health challenges.
• Creating Personalized Pranayama Protocols
• Learn to design effective pranayama protocols for individuals based on their unique health conditions and goals.

Course Details:
• Duration: 33-hour certification course offered in real-time via Zoom with Melinda Atkins and Adam Flores, plus a distance learning component.
• Delivery: Real-time virtual classes via Zoom and distance learning.
• Access: Access to the pre- and post-course distance learning course manual and online curriculum is granted upon enrollment.
• Required Books: Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Swami Muktibodhananda and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Sri Swami Satchidananda.

Cancellations less than 1 week prior to the program are nonrefundable.

Melinda Atkins, M.ED, MSc., E-RYT 500, C-IAYT, is the founding director of AUM hOMe Shala, where she trains yoga teachers and yoga therapists. She completed her Professional Level training at Kripalu, received her Clinical Yoga Therapy certification at Loyola Marymount University, became certified in the MELT Method® in 2012. Her yoga therapy practice focuses on those with neuro-motor degenerative disorders and other chronic conditions and disabilities. Melinda also develops and directs yoga programs for at-risk youth in inner-city Miami schools and holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Florida and a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

Adam Flores, Licensed CCPA , E-RYT 500, YACEP C-IAYT has advanced training in Yoga Therapy for Mental Health and is the CEO and Director of Yoga Therapy at Healing Choice, a chiropractic healthcare practice specializing in addiction recovery. He is a Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Holistic Health Practitioner in Integrative Nutrition, Western Herbalism and Ayurveda. He is currently a developing partner for BE SERENE, an addiction recovery toolkit app based in yogic principles, and a new faculty member at AUM Home Shala.
