Course Outline and Schedule

The purpose of our 400+ hour clinical yoga therapy foundation training course is to focus on both the musculoskeletal system and other systems of the body, including the cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, nervous, respiratory, and reproductive, as well the mind/body connection. Students are required to complete take-home case studies; Ayurveda protocols, and are required to write a research paper and present their findings.

Our emphasis on the musculoskeletal system includes a foundational anatomical understanding as well as the therapeutic benefits of yoga for common low-back, upper-back, knee, hip, and shoulder problems. Our intent is also to prepare students to communicate effectively with doctors by familiarizing them with the terminology of reports and clinical notes, including S.O.A.P. notes.

We also explore the therapeutic benefits of yoga for the circulatory, digestive, endocrine, nervous, respiratory, and reproductive systems, and also look closely at the mind/body connection. Graduates are equipped to teach in a wide variety of settings, with diverse populations, and alongside health-care professionals in clinical or other venues.

Students are required to complete a yoga protocol for each topic covered, as well as in-depth Ayurveda dosha protocols. Each class includes a combination of lecture, demonstration, partner work, and practical experience. Content includes relevant anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Case presentations will be used to apply information throughout the program. The practical component of the curriculum includes evaluations of self and other participants using observation, interview, and questionnaires. Each class includes lectures, partner work, and practical experience. Content is provided in lecture format and includes relevant anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Case presentations will be used to apply the information. Students are required to complete a research paper that provides an in-depth assessment of one aspect of a specific condition that would benefit from the application of yoga. The course includes a mentoring component, with a total of eleven hours of mentoring required (in person, or telephone, or via Zoom); payment is made directly to the mentor. Students are required to take a multiple-choice test before and after completion of each of the course topics along with other distance learning assignments. All students are required to carry a current Liability Policy naming AUM Home Shala as a Certificate Holder.

Students have up to 12 months to complete the 400+ Hour Foundation training. Students who successfully complete the 400+ Hour training are eligible to apply for Yoga Alliance certification at the 300-hour level, or at the 500-hour level if they hold a 200-hour yoga teacher certificate from the Shala. Graduates are also eligible to enter our Clinical Yoga Therapy Practicum, accredited by the International Association of Yoga Therapists. For more information, visit www.iayt.org.

Please note: The yoga therapy components of our course are based on IAYT accreditation, not derived from our status as an RYS® with Yoga Alliance Registry.
